Kitchener-Waterloo Tree Service | Summer Storm

On August 2nd a summer storm blew through southwestern Ontario, resulting in intense thunderstorms and a tornado in Teviotdale.

When summer storms occur, the first trees/branches to break or fall are the dead ones.  Keeping the dead trees/branches trimmed is a fantastic way to prevent storm damage.

Kitchener-Waterloo Tree Service and Tree Removal | Tree Climbing

What is Tree Climbing?

Calvin, who is the owner and operator here at Metzger's, often climbs the trees when we are trimming or removing a tree.  This means we don't need to bring in a big boom truck which can often have an impact on your lawn.

Often times, even if the client doesn't mind having the boom truck on their property, there isn't the space.  Many trees are in backyard, or side yards, or in tight spaces that we just can't get a boom truck into.  This is why we have 2 climbers on staff for our tree removal service in Kitchener-Waterloo.

These photos were taken by Chase Photography, are of our crews doing tree removal along the LRT route on King Street in Kitchener-Waterloo.  The reason Calvin needed to climb these trees is because we were extremely limited with space.  We were working around the road construction crews, pedestrians, and there was also one lane of traffic passing by.

Kitchener-Waterloo Tree Service and Tree Removal | Removing Trees Along King Street for the LRT

The Kitchener-Waterloo area is going to see some big changes in the next coming year as we prepare for the Light Rail Transit.  http://rapidtransit.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/aboutus/abouttheproject.asp

We are honoured to be a part of this project to help create a better public transportation system.

Yesterday we started some of the tree removal along King Street in Kitchener.  Due to the road being widened to accommodate the tracks for the Ion, trees close to the road way need to be removed.

Photos of a tree being dropped along King Street.  Our crew is using roping systems so we can guide where the tree is going to fall.

Bird's Eye View of Tree Removal

This is a photo Calvin recently shot, while he was up in the boom cutting a tree.
When we are in residential areas like this, we use extensive roping systems to ensure the branches are safely brought down to the ground. Our crew on the ground carefully guides the branch down after Calvin cuts it.

Can my lawnmower damage my trees?

We encourage our clients to take caution when mowing the grass around the base of a tree.  Often trees are damaged by a lawnmower, weed whip and other trimming equipment.  When a tree is injured it can lead to further problems such as decay and then inevitably the tree will start to die.

Tree Planting. What you should know.

Spring is just around the corner, and many of you will begin purchasing and planting trees.
We often get asked to recommend species of trees, however, it really does depend on why you are planting a tree.
If you are looking for privacy, many people are eager to plant evergreens.  They grow quickly, are also a great tree to block the wind.  However, they are more susceptible to being damaged in a storm.  One way of getting around this, is to plant them in a grove.  This will allow the roots to intertwine, reducing the risk of a tree being uprooted.
Hardwood trees are what we definitely recommend.  They do take longer to grow, but they are stronger, and are 3 times more likely to have the ability to withstand storms.  Again, planting them in groves, so they can all intertwine roots will help to prevent any of them from getting uprooted.
Many of you will remember the storm that whipped through the Kitchener-Waterloo area last summer.  As we went out to emergency calls, it was obvious to us that the hardwood trees had braved the strong winds much better.
With the warmer weather, does come storms, unfortunately.  We hope this has given you some ideas of how to protect your trees, and what to keep in mind when tree planting.

To Mulch? Or not to Mulch?

Mulching is a technique for covering and protecting the root area of a tree.  This is very effective in trees that are young, as they are more susceptible to harm.

A big reason we encourage our clients to mulch is because it can reduce the water loss up to 30% !!!
It can also help control weeds, which steal nutrients that should be going to the tree.

If you really want to spice things up and give your tree some TLC, the best method is to add some compost to the soil around the base of the tree, and then cover that with mulch.

When selecting a mulch we have a few tips to guide you:
-VARIETY! find a mulch that is a combination of many kinds of trees
-stay away from bagged mulch whenever you can, as most often it comes in plastic bags.
-use coarse wood chips, not sawdust.  Air cannot penetrate through sawdust, which promotes growth of fungi and mold.

Tree Maintenance

The best time to do trimming and pruning is in the winter when the tree is dormant.  This is not to say that you can't trim and prune in the spring and summer months.  But, if you would like to take advantage of this winter that just goes on and on... :)

In the next couple of months, as the snow begins to melt we encourage you to get outside and take a good look at your trees.  If you still have any lights left on them, we encourage you to take them off.  If you forget about them, it can girdle the growth.
Check for any broken branches, or dying branches.  These are often the first to come down in a storm, which can be hazardous.
If you wrapped your tree for the winter, it will shortly be time for that protective layer to come off.

If you have any questions about your tree, be sure to call our office at 519-954-5649

Too Much Snow?

YES!!!
DEFINITELY!!!
Even for us...
We have actually had to pause most of our tree service as we wait for some of the snow to melt.

We are still doing estimates and can give you advice about a tree in question.  However, tree service will resume as soon as possible.

Introducing... The Lumberjacks

During the winter months we slow down on the tree service and start logging.

We go into wood lots and thin out the trees so that the healthier younger trees can grow better.

Depending on the species of trees, 5-10 acres could be worth 10,000-40,000$

If you are in a rural area and have a wood lot, contact us if you are interested in finding out value of thinning it out.

Another post on TRIMMING!

Trimming...
Yes, another post on trimming :)

Today we are trimming a soft maple tree at a residental address.  The reason for the trimming being done today, is so that a spruce tree growing close to the maple tree can get more sunlight.

We see this quite frequently, where a larger tree is blocking a younger tree from getting the light it needs.  This is solved quite easily, by giving the larger tree a generous trim, allowing the sunlight to then reach the smaller tree.

Smaller trees need a little bit more love that mature trees.  Watch for small trees on your property that may need some extra love and sunlight! :)

Hello.

This week we are at a Heritage Property, trimming and cutting trees.

We love Heritage Properties, but with these lovely old properties come old trees.  And old trees are prone to breakage.
So at the moment we are trimming some beautiful old trees, so that they can have a longer healthier life.

If you too also have some older trees on your property, and you are wanting to keep them growing and healthy, contact us for a free estimate!

All to often we are called in to remove older trees that have not been cared for, and if trimmed and maintained could have lasted years longer.

SHOW YOUR TREES SOME LOVE!

Why Trimming Your Tree is Important.

Today we are trimming trees in Waterloo Region.  Trimming trees is vital to their health.  It can improve health, reduce shade, and influence flowering, and fruiting.

Approximately, 10-15% of the live foliage may be removed per season.  Younger actively growing trees, may have up to 25% of the foliage trimmed.

We recommend trimming your trees every 5 years for optimal health.
